The automatics have a weak spot in that the cooler is in the radiator, and leakage would get coolant into the ATF, which was one of the few ways to take out the transmission. When I was looking at the same vintage 4Runner the trouble spots were radiator and possibly rear-end. I'd be concerned about coolant being flushed properly, ATF changes (IIRC it's every 30kmiles on the auto), but the other driveline fluids are probably 'ok' if they've been neglected in this period of time. I'd look for rust and then maintance records. I *think* 96 may have been the only year that 3.4's had headgasket problems I forget now. 3.4L has a stout reputation while the 4spd auto steals power it too has a stout reputation.
